There are tons of possibilities to make our lives more convenient, easier and more comfortable when it comes to smart homes filled with connected products. Imagine that you are driving home on a scorching summer day. Rather than turn the air conditioner on when you arrive home and wait for your house to cool down, you can simply use your smartphone or tablet when you leave your office to tell your smart thermostat to lower the temperature.
Or imagine that you are making dinner and you ask your Amazon Alexa, the voice assistant on your Amazon Echo, to tell you today’s biggest news stories so that you could focus on chopping those vegetables.
There is no shortage of possibilities for smart home devices and home automation is predicted to be the wave of the future. We have compiled a detailed guide on how house automation and smart home technology will change our way of life below. Today we will be featuring the Amazon Echo, Nest, and the Smart Refrigerator.
Smart Buildings and Smart Homes
We expect the number of smart home devices shipped will grow from eighty-three million in 2015 to one hundred ninety-three million in 2020. This includes all smart appliances such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, smart home safety and security systems such as monitors, sensors, alarm systems, and cameras, and smart home energy equipment such as smart thermostats and smart lighting.
As more connected devices could handle more operations such as lighting and temperature and frees up the home owner to perform other tasks, this makes it more convenient for homeowners.
However, beyond this aspect, smart home devices could help reduce costs and conserve energy. In the examples above, you would have a comfortable and cool experience when you get home, but you can also leave your air conditioner off when you are not home. This would lower your electric bill and greatly reduce energy consumption. Smart lights would function in the same way.
Smart Home Devices
Smart home technology devices have already hit the market and made their way into thousands of homes around the world.
Start off, there is the Amazon Echo, which is potentially the first and most recognizable name in this space. The Echo’s Alexa voice-activated assistant brings convenience that few other products can match. Amazon also offers two related products called the Tap and the Dot.
Nest has created a learning thermostat that can automatically adjust the temperature based on your location and uses a far-field sensor to find the time and temperature from a distance. It now works with Alexa as well with the recent update.
One of the most convenient innovations of this time is the smart refrigerator. For example, this fridge lets you know when you are running out of milk. As long as you dedicate some time to initially set things properly, this is a smart home tool that can improve your daily life.
